The Negros Museum Initiative: Communicating Culture

I was fortunate to be in a two-day seminar at the Negros Museum last May 21-22, 2012, with Ms. Jeannie E. Javelosa, museum curator of the Yuchengco Museum, a columnist of the Philippine Star and a culture and sustainability advocate. She was with Mr. Nico Reyes, Business Development and Marketing Manager of EON, a leading public relations firm in the Philippines that provides communication consultancy services to some of the top brands and organizations in the country.

We were given an interesting lecture on Culture as basis for development and communication, with a focus on Branding. This is where we learned the 4 Cs i.e. the Core of the Philippine Brand which are collaborative, caring, colorful and creative. We talked about brand personality and what characteristics sets a company or organization apart from the rest, meaning we identified the unique and outstanding qualities there could be in the organizations we represent.

I represented the private business sector, specifically the organic and sustainable cultural market segment, while many of us who participated were from the tourism sector e.g. Negros Occidental, Capiz, and Cebu to name a few. Some were student-writers from the University of St. La Salle and the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos and a few were fresh graduates from UP Diliman and UP Baguio who yet have to establish their niche in the professional world.

What was very helpful was the workshop we had on marketing and promotions i.e. hitting your desired audience by making use of various modes of technology and communication. I remember the classes we had in Organizational Communication back in UP Manila where our advertising and public relations professors ranted about the prime importance of face-to-face communication and word-of-mouth advertising which, up to now, remain to be the most effective modes of communication and persuasion.

It was a delightful two-day affair which we hope to share and echo to our work colleagues and friends. Much has been said about how we all put in effort in communicating culture i.e. our way of life. However, the bottomline in getting your message across, be it about culture or any other interesting topic you may want to share, is the sincerity i.e. the rectitude of purpose, by which you want other people to receive and understand your message.

After this seminar, I was more convinced that the truth is plain and simple.
And it has more than enough power to move and change the people around us.
